Eagles defeat Lone Star, fall on FIFA ranking table

The Super Eagles on Wednesday defeated the Lone Star of Liberia 2-0 in a friendly game.
But before the match played in Monrovia, the Eagles had fallen in ranking on the table released monthly by the Federation of International Football Associations.
Sunday Mba scored the two goals of the match in which the Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, used an entirely home based team.
Mba scored in the ninth and 30th minutes of the match.
Keshi said with the class displayed by the Eagles in the international friendly, the entirely home based team could only get better.
He said what the team and coaching crew needed at this crucial time of turning around the fortunes of the Super Eagles was encouragement.
Keshi said that his intention is to invite a few foreign based players to beef up the team for the Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda, which has already released a 30-man list for the match.
The Eagles fell 11 places on the FIFA table, which was released on Wednesday.
It came down from its 45th position to 56 worldwide and is now ranked eighth in Africa.
Many have predicted this would happen with the absence of the Super Eagles from the just-concluded 2012 African Cup of Nations, which Zambia surprisingly won.
Zambia moved from number 71 to 43 on the FIFA table while Cote d’Ivoire, the runners up in the AFCON, is number 15.
Spain and Germany are rated first and second by FIFA, with Netherlands, Uruguay, England, Portugal, Brazil, Italy, Croatia and Denmark following in that order.
