Operatives of the Department of State Services on Wednesday made moves to forcefully eject a former Director General of the Service, retired Colonel Kayode Are, from his home.
The operatives were said to have arrived the home of Are at 50, Alexander Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos State at about 3pm, shooting sporadically into the air.
As they came out of the two buses that brought them to the house, they made attempts to break down the door.
The operatives claimed to be acting on the orders of their new DG, Lawal Musa Daura.
This was before Are’s family members alerted the press.
It was learnt that the occupation of the house by Are became an issue after Daura was appointed DG by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Are had been occupying the house since he left as the DG of the DSS.
However, based on the move by Daura to eject him, he was said to have gone to the court where he obtained an order restraining the DSS from forcing him to leave the house.
A family source, in an email to The Eagle Online, said: “There is a rule in the service that all retired DGs are given a residence to live in for their lifetime and security, etc.
“All the former DGs and even the DG that took over from Colonel Are are enjoying this benefit.
“Even some of them have bought the houses.
“Colonel Are got his own allocation in 2010 and has lived in the house since then.
“When the new DG took over, he suddenly ordered that Colonel Are should move out of the house.
“Colonel Are went to court and obtained an order that status quo be maintained.
“After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter, the order was eventually served on the DSS on December 1, 2015.
“The next morning, officers of the SSS invaded the house and are trying to forcibly remove Colonel Are and his family from the house.”
