Members of the National Peace Committee on Thursday met with three of the major actors in the disputed February 23, 2019 presidential election in Nigeria in the bid to find an amicable solution.
The Committee met the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar; and his running mate, Peter Obi.
While the committee met Osinbajo in the Presidential Villa, Abuja late on Thursday, it had held a closed door session with Abubakar and Obi earlier in the evening.
Top among the members of the NPC at the meeting were former military Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar; Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah; Cardinal John Onaiyekan; and Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo.
Abubakar had earlier told Nigerians that he had before the announcement of the result of the election, in which President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, told General Abubakar that the election had been rigged and he was not going to accept the outcome.
While the Committee met with Abubakar and Obi at about 6pm, the meeting with Osinbajo was held later in the day at the Presidential Villa.
