A leader of the Delta State chapter of the Labour Party, Esiri Onoduwereho, was on Thursday nabbed by men of the State Police Command for allegedly duping some staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission of vital documents relating to the just concluded elections in the state.
The stolen documents include result sheets and other administrative papers.
Detectives, however, pounced on Onoduwereho while cooling off in one of the hotels in Asaba, the state capital, where he allegedly hid himself after committing the crime.
The state Police Commissioner, Alkali Baba Usman, who paraded some suspected criminals at the command headquarters in Asaba, confirmed the development.
Usman said investigation into the matter was on.
It was gathered that Onoduwereho posed as an agent of the party and thereafter applied for the Certified Copies of Results for Tribunal purposes at the commission’s office in Asaba before nemesis caught up with him.
The alarm raised by the staff of the commission attracted the security agents who recovered some of the documents from his hideout.
The matter has reached an advanced stage at the office of the Officer in Charge of General Information, Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
INEC officials accorded him such privilege because the party leader has long before now familiarized himself with the commission as a principal agent of the party.
The executive leaders of the party in the state swiftly said “the matter is purely police issue”.
