Retired sports administrator, Elias Gora, says the continued postponement of elections into the national sports federation was an aberration to the rules guiding member states of the International Olympic Committee.
Gora said: “The elections into the boards of National Sports Federations are long overdue; the Olympics Games were held last year August and till now no date has been confirmed for it.
“Under the IOC rules, it’s stipulated that elections into the bodies should be held within three months after the Olympics.
“As it is now, we don’t even have a date for it since postponement is the order of the day, this does not speak well of us as a nation.”
NAN reports that the elections should have been held latest by December last year but it had suffered many postponements since the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil from August 5 to 21.
The elections have now been extended to June 13.
The Chef de Mission to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, New Delhi, said the IOC knew the importance of organising elections immediately after the Olympics, which was why the law was made.
Gora said: “Holding elections immediately after the Olympics is to enable each IOC member country to do better if they did not perform well in the immediate past Games.
“Enough time is given for you to elect new executive officers that are committed to redefining the course of the federations.
“When elections are conducted early enough, there is enough time to plan for those who believe in early preparation of the most prestigious sports events.
“In line with the Olympic Charter, all National Sports Federations are to serve for a period of 4 years.”
According to Gora, elections should hold without further delay as we have no excuse anymore.
NAN reports that the federations were inaugurated in May 2013 were dissolved on May 5.
