Nigeria’s Ejike Uzoenyi and Rabiu Ali are in contention for the highest goal scorer’s award as the tournament comes to an end on Saturday in Cape Town.
Rabiu Ali is currently in the second spot as he trails South African striker, Bernard Parker, who scored four goals before the Bafana Bafana were sent packing in the group stage.
Although, Uzoenyi and Ali are tied on three goals each, the latter is ahead, having scored his third goal of the competition in the 55th minute of Nigeria’s encounter against Morocco.
Uzoenyi’s third goal arrived in the 89th minute of the same encounter.
In an interview before the team left Mangaung for Cape Town, Uzoenyi confessed that the dream to win the golden boot award is on his mind
“I want to win an award at this tournament, may be the highest goals scorer or best player. I am aware that the South African striker (Bernard Parker) is ahead of Rabiu and I but my aim is score more goals.”
In the same context, Kano Pillars midfielder, Rabiu Aliu, declared his desire to win the award
“I won’t be selfish in Saturday’s game because I am targeting the highest goals score award. If it’s the will of God, then the award will not elude me.”
South Africa’s exit from the competition leaves Uzoenyi, Ali and Libya’s Abdelsalam Faraj Oma, who has also found the net thrice, to slug it out for the award.
However, in their bid to topple the South African, they must score twice in today’s matches.
Nigeria will play Zimbabwe in the third place match while Libya faces Ghana in the final at the Cape Town Stadium.
