Abayomi Komolafe, a 31-year-old bullion van driver hired by Union Bank, on Monday appeared before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for alleged reckless driving and manslaughter.
The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Eigbejiale, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 30 at about 10:30pm at Opic Roundabout in Abeokuta.
Eigbejiale said the accused, the driver of a Mercedes Benz bullion van with registration number PF281SPY, drove in a reckless and dangerous manner, which caused the death of a 19-year-old man, Gbenga Okesola.
Eigbejiale said Komolafe drove the vehicle without a driver’s and vehicle licence, insurance and road worthiness certificate.
He said the offences contravened Sections 18, 7 (1) 14 (1), 25 (2) (b) (p) of Road Traffic Law Vol 4 Laws of Ogun, 2006 and Section 31 (1) of the Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance.
The accused through his counsel, Isreal Shogbamu, applied for bail on liberal terms and assured the court that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Anthony Araba granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Araba ordered that the bullion van be retained in the court premises and adjourned the case till June 5 for further hearing.
