Borders Closure: Our revenue increasing — Customs

The Controller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, retired Colonel Hameed Ali, on Wednesday disclosed that the revenue of the Service started increasing since the closure of the borders by the Federal Government.
This is even as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is expected to appear the Joint National Assembly Committee on Finance to defend the N305 exchange rate for the 2020 budget.
Speaking before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Finance, Ali told the lawmakers that there has been continuous increase in the money collected by the Customs since the Federal Government ordered the closure of the borders.
He said on a particular day, the Customs Service generated N9.2 billion, adding that since the borders have been closed, many exporters that normally pass through Benin Republic decided to bring their goods in through Apapa port in Lagos.
Ali said: “Since we have closed the border, our revenue keeps on increasing.
“We collected N9.2 billion in one day.
“The Custom Service generates N4.7 billion to N5.8 billion on daily basis.
“Most of the cargoes that go to Benin Republic are forced to bring their goods to Apapa.”
Ali also informed the lawmakers that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered Customs to auction vehicles in their custody to government agencies in Nigeria.
