The differing opinions on the overall performance of President Muhammadu Buhari in these early days of his government is taking the country back to dark days when criticisms were based on frivolities and sentiments. It is obvious that the number of days spent in the office is too little to be relied upon as yardstick for making rendition of a government. Though few of the arguments have their merits, but the barometer used in such measurement appeared to emanate from the background of loathing and repulsion, it is ill-conceived and fundamentally crummy. For now, irrespective of our differences as a nation, working together towards achieving a great success for this government should be our focus.
A major distinctive factor for success of a government is the understanding of its vision. For a vision to see the light of the day, it requires competent, dedicated and honest minds. Combine efforts of the present leadership of the 8th National Assembly and the executive arm of government under the leadership of President Buhari should provide a strong base required for an excelling nation. Nigerians are sincere in some attitudes, appointment of ministers and other key officers that will smoothen the running of government should not have taken this long. But since the president has assured the whole country of his next action, we should be rest assured that in months, hopefully, these appointments, if well conceived, we can easily go back to bed with our two eyes closed while our leaders are championing the course to growth.
One thing that keeps bothering us as citizens is the credibility and antecedents of the prospective public officers. It should be clear that President Buhari will not hire foreigners to run the affairs of his country. It will be of immense benefit for him to look beyond party affiliation while choosing his cabinet. The warning to his party governors to forget nominating ministers for him is a sign of good things to come as it will help him to reposition the country for only the best can sail through. This should not be seen as backstabbing of party men who laboured vigorously for his emergence.
President Buhari needs to consult widely in aforementioned areas. The Nigerians in Diaspora should be engaged to ensure equal participation; this will arrest the issue of brain drain. As at today, different groups have emerged across the country to solely help in rightly projecting the nation, let the government stretch its hand to these patriots and engage them to contribute their quotas to the national development.
We should be quick to pinpoint it to the president that his government cannot afford to dash the hope of Nigerians. Party leaders that set their personal aspirations above their party loyalty should down size their egos as the fate of the nation has been reposed on their party; toying with it means they are re-writing their posterity. They should forge a stronger tie to enable the president achieve the best in managing the already polarised people and decaying system.
The hope should be kept alive. President Buhari and his party should go for gold. Beside the ministerial positions, establishment and strengthening of bodies and institutions that will enhance economic development with its membership drawn from different sectors should be inaugurated immediately. For instance, an institution can develop strategy on retail marketing development. Most countries depend on private sectors to shoulder the job provision responsibilities; this government should see it as a fact and engage technocrats to pave way for the emergence of a stronger and sustainable economy.
