The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps command in Sokoto State said it had deployed officers to border between Nigeria and other countries to check illegal arms importation.
The Commandant of the corps in the state, Adamu Soja, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto on Sunday that the measure was to rid the country of arms and dangerous weapons being smuggled into the country.
“What we are doing is to check the borders and ensure that no one will takes advantage of their porous nature to import arms and hand them over to the wrong hands,” he said.
Soja said the security officers were deployed to Illela, Gudu, Tangaza, Sabon-Birni border posts.
He said the security personnel had been adequately briefed on methods to be adopted in dealing with the issue, adding that the command would partner other security agencies to fight criminality.
He said Sokoto State had always been known as a peaceful state and that all hands were on deck to sustain the tempo through well-coordinated security proactive approaches.
The commandant solicited the support of traditional rulers in border communities in mobilizing the people to cooperate with officers assigned to check illegalities and activities of miscreants in their area.
According to him, such vital intelligence reports from communities will aid the plain security officers to apprehend all those involved in illegal activity.
Soja advised officers and men of the command to continue to put in their best and promised that hard working officers would be rewarded.
