The wife of the Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, at the weekend called for an end to all forms of discrimination that are capable of denying women and girl child their rights, pointing out that women deserve to be appreciated and commended for their contributions towards the advancement of the society.
According to Amosun: “Millions of women and girls suffer from violence both in peace and in war time and this usually manifests in various forms like battering of women, rape, genital mutilation, segregation amongst others.”
The wife of the Governor of Ogun State stated this while addressing women during the 2013 International Women’s Day celebration organised by her office in collaboration with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development at the Valley View Auditorium, Isale- Igbein, Abeokuta, with the theme: “Time for Action to End Violence Against Women.”
She added that time has come for women to rise up to the task and ensure the safety of their fellow women and girl child, saying this year’s theme was significant as it helped reflect on the challenges confronting women and thus proffered solutions to those challenges.
Amosun lauded the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, for rising up to the occasion to prevent and protect women against violence as well as upholding their rights and giving them a better representation at the highest decision-making level in the state.
She cited the example of the newly sworn-in first female Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General in the state, Mrs. Abimbola Ibironke Akeredolu.
Also speaking at the occasion, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Elisabeth Sonubi, noted that the International Women’s Day was a rallying point for women to further appreciate themselves.
