Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke, is seeking to become the first female Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Consequently, President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated her for the highly influential position as the 165th Ordinary Meeting of OPEC holds in Vienna, Austria.
Apart from electing the Secretary-General, the conference will also look at the decision of Oil Ministers of OPEC not to change the output target of 30 million barrels per day (bpd).
Nigeria’s first female Minister of Petroleum is looking forward to succeed Abdalla Salem el-Badri, 74, of Libya who has been occupying the position since 2007.
The conference appoints the Secretary- General who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Organisation for a period of three years, renewable at the end of the tenure.
Mrs. Alison-Madueke is facing stiff opposition from major players in the oil sector, the candidates of Saudi Arabia and Iran.
However, If feelers from Austria are anything to go by, Nigeria’s candidate is favoured to emerge victorious going by the deadlock over the position between the Saudi Arabia and Iran candidates.
Nigeria, no doubt, a big player in the oil market will be banking on support from African countries.
