There were strong indications on Monday that a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, will emerge as the Minority Leader of the Senate when the Senate resumes on Tuesday.
Our correspondent learnt that Akpabio has received the endorsement of most senators elected on the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party.
Also, Senator Philip Aduda may emerge as Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi as Deputy Minority Whip and Emmanual Bwacha as Deputy Minority Leader.
The meeting of the PDP senators caucus was scheduled to hold on Monday night at the the residence of Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, to finalise the party’s position on the emergence of principal officers.
However, some senators from the South South, who spoke on condition of anonymity, are not comfortable with the decision of the party to pick Akpabio as Minority Leader.
They argued that other ranking senators like James Manager and Gorge Sekibo needed to be considered for the position.
However, a senator, who also spoke on condition anonymity, explained that the ranking argument against Akpabio cannot stand.
He said what is necessary to emerge a Minority Leader is for the candidate to be a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The senator explained that the PDP senators caucus decided to endorse Akpabio as the Minority Leader because of his leadership skills, which he said is necessary to rebuild the party ahead of the 2019 general election.
