The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, said that two years into its tenure his administration has fulfilled its electoral promises to the people of Kwara State as encapsulated in the Shared Prosperity Programme.
Ahmed, who made this assertion in Ilorin at the 2013 New Partnership for Africa Development, Kwara State Business and Investment Development Interactive session, highlighted some of the achievements as including the rehabilitation of 400 classrooms, provision of free education up to post primary level, reduction of tuition fees in the state-owned university at Malete.
According to Governor Ahmed, in line with his administration’s electoral promises, over 300 boreholes have been sunk and 13 water works across the state rehabilitated in the last two years to create greater access to water.
Ahmed recalled that additional 189 communities now enjoy regular electricity supply under his administration’s rural and urban electrification programme.
The governor also said that over 800 kilometres of rural, urban and federal roads have been rehabilitated by the state government to enhance infrastructural development while primary and secondary health care institutions as well as five General Hospitals have either been rehabilitated or at various stages of completion.
On employment generation, Governor Ahmed said over 2000 youths were employed through the Kwara State Bridge Empowerment Scheme, 28,000 small business owners benefitted from a N250 million loan facility while another N100 million facility is earmarked for Micro, Small, Medium Scale enterprises this year.
The governor said in the coming months, the state government would implement landmark projects to accelerate economic growth and stimulate rapid job creation, while an Independent Power Project to provide constant electricity across the state to improve the welfare of the people will be established.
The Chairman of the occasion, Engineer Lanre Sagaya, said NEPAD was to promote African integration by focusing on issues such as creating enabling environment for economic growth.
An industrialist, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim, in his contribution, said the interactive section provided useful platform for the private sector to table its challenges before government to communicate its expectations from business owners.
