The University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been shut by the authorities.
This followed the violent protest by the students over the killing of four of their colleagues in Aluu community, a major residential area for students of the university.
Reports had it that the protest started peacefully in the morning but degenerated later in the day.
Houses and cars were reported to have been destroyed during the protest, with major roads, including the popular Choba Junction, blocked by the protesters.
Also on Tuesday on the social media, unconfirmed information had it that the mother of one of the slain students, Ugonna, had died.
She was reported to have died as a result of the shock of the death of her son.
Ugonna is reported to be her only son.
