The Athletics Federation of Nigeria on Thursday said the athletes who would represent the country at the 2016 Olympics Games in Brazil would begin a training tour in February.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics will hold from August 7 to 21 in Brazil.
The President of AFN, Solomon Ogba, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the training tour of the US would create the needed synergy among the athletes.
Ogba said: “We are going to be in the US like many other countries as from February.
“Our athletes will be in the US where other athletes from other countries will also train for the Olympics.
“There are is need for them to train and compete against most of the athletes that they will compete against at the Olympics.
“It will also help the athletes to run some relay races that they need to run toward perfecting their skills and techniques ahead of the Games.”
Ogba said there were top-class relay races the athletes needed to participate in toward adequate preparation for the quadrennial competition.
He said: “For any athlete to perform well in relay races, he or she must first run a good time individually.
“Therefore we urge the athletes to go and focus on improving themselves individually before they talk of running relays.
“There is no short cut to victory.
“People should not think that they can win a medal through short cut.”
The AFN president tasked the athletes to be disciplined.
“So, they should be disciplined and train hard to make a mark at the Olympics,” he said.
