The Ebonyi State Government has set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the recent killings across the State alleged to have emanated from some cult and political parties activities.
Recall that no fewer than seven persons were allegedly killed during the last primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Ikwo, Ezza South and Ohaozara Local Government Areas of the State.
Addressing newsmen at the end of Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Aakaliki, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Cletus Ofoke, said the decision was informed by the report presented to the Council by the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Security, Kenneth Ugballa, bordering on spate of political and cult killings in the State within the past few months.
Ofoke noted that the Government of Ebonyi State, reputed for its peacefulness, would adopt all necessary measures to nip in the bud all such activities capable of leading to breakdown of law and order.
The Commission, headed by Justice Elvis Ngene, was given the mandate to unravel both the immediate and remote causes of the killings, identify those involved as well as make recommendations to Government on ways to forestall such occurrences in the future.
Ofoke said: “Council noted and viewed these killings as a result of what preliminary reports suggested to be, among other things, Cult clashes, brigandage and politically motivated killings.
“As you are aware, Ebonyi is a peaceful State and Council unanimously resolved that a Commission of Inquiry be set up to unravel the immediate and remote causes of all those killings across the State, with a view to nipping them in the bud and with a view to ensuring that we don’t record other killings, attacks and other related violent activities, especially as we approach the 2019 general elections.”
