In a renewed effort to stop open defecation within Birnin Kebbi town and its environs, the Kebbi State Urban Development Authority says it will construct 50 mobile toilets.
Alhaji Malami Shekare, the General Manager of the authority, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Monday that the construction would begin as soon as the authority secures approval from the state government.
Shekare said: “The move is in response to President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to government at all levels to redouble efforts and work toward making the nation free from open defecation.
“We have already sent a proposal to the state government for the construction of 50 mobile toilets in the Birnin Kebbi metropolis as part of our efforts to reduce open defecation in the state capital.”
Shekare urged private and well-to-do individuals to collaborate with KUDA to establish commercial toilets to complement the efforts of the state government in making the state clean.
He said: “We have been making calls for whosoever wishes to establish commercial toilets in the state to come to the authority and show his intent; we will provide space for free for that purpose.”
Also another organisation, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, said that the agency in collaboration with the UNICEF had begun campaigns in the state on the dangers of open defecation.
The Acting General Manager of RUWASSA, Alhaji Bala Yelwa, said that over 169 communities had been triggered for community-led sanitation aimed at eradicating open defecation in the state.
Yelwa called on the traditional and religious leaders to help the agency on its effort to improve sanitation and eradicate open defecation in the state.
