The Presidency on Thursday explained the delay in President Muhammadu Buhari’s arrival from the United States of America.
The explanation was offered by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
This followed the query as to the whereabout of the President after leaving the United States on Tuesday where he met with President Donald Trump on Monday, without his arriving Abuja as at Thursday, for a journey of less than 13 hours.
Shehu said in his explanation, via a text message, that Buhari had a “technical stopover” in London on his way back home.
He said this was because Buhari flew in a smaller aircraft than the one he used to travel with, adding that the bigger aircraft had gone for checks.
Shehu said: “The big jet is under repair.
“It has been taken for major repairs.
“So the President is using a small plane and there is a limit to the distance the small plane can cover.
“So, the technical stopover I talked about is that the journey from US to Abuja is broken into two.
“Technical stopover is that the plane stops at a point, refuel, do some checks and then proceed on the journey.
“This is very normal.
“There is nothing unusual about it.
“In any case, they are already on their way back home.
“It is a routine thing.
“The plane can do Abuja-Washington, that’s about 12 hours and the maximum the plane can fly is 12 hours, 40 minutes.
“But you don’t need to push it to the edge.”
President Buhari eventually arrived on Thursday night.
He landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 10:35pm.
