Ibrahim Khaleel, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, said on Tuesday that the union would not relent in the struggle for local government autonomy.
Khaleel told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the struggle was a continuous process.
He said he was optimistic that the incoming administration would turn a new leaf on the local government issue.
He said: “Our struggle for autonomy for NULGE is a life time struggle.
“We will not relent and we will never relent until victory is assured.
“We are already trying to reposition our focus because of the new government and we believe going by the comments of the president-elect over the years on the local government issue, certainly, the government will turn a new leaf.”
Reacting to non-payment of salaries by state governments, Khaleel said the Nigeria Labour Congress had given a directive that all state governors owing must pay before they leave office.
According to him, paying workers should be a priority to all state governments.
The national president said the inauguration ceremony of the 6th national executive council of the union would hold on Wednesday at the Labour House.
