The US Department of Homeland Security on Thursday expressed its willingness to work with Special Fraud Unit of Nigeria Police on money laundering-related issues.
This was contained in a statement issued by the unit’s spokesperson, DSP Ngozi Isintume, on Thursday in Lagos.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is the largest investigative agency in the US Department of Homeland Security.
The statement said ICE officials, who paid a courtesy visit to the unit, said their mission was to discuss the issues of cyber crime and other related offences with the Commissioner of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin.
“They said the role of the SFU has rekindled their organisation’s interest in Nigeria and that the unit had made their job easy,” the statement added.
The leader of the team, Special Agent/Attache, Matt Baechtle, expressed appreciation to the commissioner and his men for their professional handling of cases of fraud/arms running reported by the US consulate in Nigeria.
The statement quoted the special agent as their pledging unflinching support for and collaboration with the unit.
The statement added: “They also promised to assist the unit in the proposed training of officers and gate keepers of financial organisations to nip fraud in the bud.
“It will be recalled that the unit has a robust relationship with US consulate in the area of criminal investigation, such as identity abuse, human trafficking and abuse of diversity visa lottery processes.”
