UPP will provide credible alternative to governance in Enugu – Chairman

Ken Onyekaonwu, Chairman of the United Progressive Party in Enugu State, says the party is ready to provide a credible alternative to governance in the state.
Onyekaonwu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Wednesday that the party, registered in 2012, was well positioned to wrestle power from the ruling PDP government in the state.
He said that UPP formidable structures in the rural areas and great followership in urban centers of the state had become a force to be reckoned with in the area.
The state chairman said that the leadership of the party would soon roll out its programmes for the 2019 general elections to culminate in massive mobilisation.
He, however, said that the state leadership of the party was consulting with a view to presenting candidates that would fit the dynamics of modern leadership.
Onyekaonwu said that several people, made up of young technocrats in the party, had shown interest to seek elections into all the elective political offices in the state.
He said: “We have a sizable number of aspirants jostling for elective positions and will soon roll out our programmes for the 2019 general elections.
“We expect that more aspirants will come on board as we continue to interface with interested individuals.”
Onyekaonwu said that the optimism of aspirants to win the governorship election in the state was derived from the poor quality of governance in the state.
He said: “As a party, we have some issues with the way things are going on in our state.
“We are not comfortable with the level of poverty and re-emergence of potholes on our roads.
“We are not happy with the dilapidated traffic infrastructure in the state, including streets and traffic lights.
“There are a whole lot of issues we are not happy with and I am confident that our party has the capacity to address them.”
The state party chairman said that two governorship aspirants had already shown interest to run on the platform of UPP.
He assured: “We shall be presenting to residents of the state, technocrats grounded in the art of governance to lead Enugu State.”
Onyekaonwu, who said that the time had come for the poor narrative to change in the governance of the state, appealed to “the people to be part of history”.
Onyekaonwu said that UPP would offer renewed hope of a better life to residents of the state.
