The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has condemned the recent killing of an innocent student of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State during a protest against payment of tuition fees by the university authorities.
The umbrella body of senior staff in the oil and gas industry also called on the Federal Government, especially the Federal Ministry of Education and the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to investigate the circumstance that led to the death of the student and identify as well as bring to justice anybody behind the dastardly act.
According to the Acting General Secretary of PENGASSAN, Comrade Lumumba Okugbawa, the killing of the unarmed protesting students was a dangerous signal to individual fundamental human right to lawful and peaceful procession and protest in the country.
Okugbawa expressed concern that if the unarmed protesting student could be killed while in peaceful protest against increase in their tuition fee, “it portends danger for workers and any other lawful group that may be protesting for improvement of their welfare and that of the society”.
He, therefore, called on the University of Port Harcourt authorities, the Rivers State Police Command and the Inspector General of Police to fish out the killer, prosecute and punish the offender.
