The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has commiserated with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Army on the death of Brigadier General Dayo Apere, the Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke.
The Governor’s condolence was contained in a statement by his Principal Special Assistant on Media, Nathaniel Ikyur.
According to the statement, Ortom said the death of Apere on October 2 of an undisclosed ailment was a huge tragedy to Nigeria’s war against terrorism.
It described the death of Apere as a big blow to the Army and particularly Benue State that had been contending with militia, bandits and kidnappers.
It stated that the contributions of Operation Whirl Stroke in fighting criminality in Benue State were instrumental to the relative peace the state was enjoying presently.
It stated also that Ortom was personally pained over the death of the late Army General.
The Governor described the late General as a true partner in the Benue State Government’s fight against herdsmen.
The statement added that herdsmen had invaded the state and sustained attacks on unarmed farming communities, killing and dispossessing them of their farmlands.
It quoted Ortom as saying Benue State indeed lost a fine and dedicated officer at a time that the war against terrorism was growing.
It stated also that the Governor prayed God Almighty to grant the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss of Apere.
