The UN health agency on Thursday said 30 African countries – and at least 142 worldwide – had detected the Omicron variant.

In its weekly epidemiological update, published on Tuesday, WHO warned that the variant was becoming increasingly prevalent in Colombia and Ecuador and had shown signs of possible resistance to vaccines.
The UN health agency, in its latest update on Wednesday, attributed the uptick to “substantial” caseload increases of 33 per cent in the Western Pacific and 37 per cent in the Eastern Mediterranean – where coronavirus fatalities also rose 48 and 31 per cent, respectively.
