The Katsina State Government has banned the use of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in the night across 19 Local Governments (LGs) as part of efforts to enhance security.
This was revealed by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, in a statement he issued on Saturday.
The strike was embarked on over operational permit enforced on them by the Kano State Road and Traffic Agency.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the development reduced traffic gridlock normally being experienced in the city as a result of high number of tricycles.
The Director-General, Niger State Child Right Agency, Maryam Kolo, confirmed this development on Sunday.
The patrol team had intercepted a Daylong motorcycle, with registration number GE 225 UT, on which were three young men, including the suspect.
One of the operators, Saheed Eniola, told NAN that he decided to work in order to provide food for his family, saying that the 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. restriction was not necessary.
This was disclosed by the managing director of the agency, Baffa Dan’agundi, while briefing newsmen in Kano.
The suspects were arrested following a report lodged at the Awa Ijebu Divisional Headquarters of the command by a worker in the company, who reported that he saw some people in a bush very close to the Sandtrust Quarry loading cement into their tricycles, and that he suspected the cement had been stolen from the company’s warehouse.
The defendants, whose addresses were not given, are charged with possession of firearms without licence.
Hajiya Aisha Sa’idu-Bala, Director-General, Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority, announced the ban in a statement in Kaduna.
The tricycle operators, commonly referred to as Keke Maruwa, urged the government to rescind its ban on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in 15 local government and council development areas, which began on February 1.
The statement said: “The suspension is with immediate effect; the tricycle operators have taken laws into their hands and we cannot allow this chaos to continue otherwise the situation will degenerate.”
Andrew Bala, the command’s Public Education Officer, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos.
