The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, BudgIT, Enough is Enough and 583 concerned Nigerians have filed a lawsuit asking the Federal High Court, Abuja to “restrain and stop President Muhammadu Buhari and Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning from releasing N37 billion allocated for the renovation of the National Assembly complex to the Federal Capital Development Agency and the National Assembly until an impact assessment of the spending is carried out.”

The Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has responded to the joint Freedom of Information request by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Enough is Enough and BudgIT requesting him to use his “good offices and leadership position to provide information on spending on military operations across the country, particularly in the Northeast.”

The urgent appeal by SERAP was sent to: Seong-Phil Hong, Working Group on Arbitrary Detention; Michel Forst, Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders; Nils Melzer, Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; and David Kaye, Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression
