The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has distanced himself from endorsing any candidate as the next president of the Nigeria Football Federation.
A palace spokesman, Ibrahim Sagir, disclosed the position of the Sultan Abubakar, in a statement he issued on Monday.
Sagir accused some obscure blogs of misleading the public, just as he claimed that there is no iota of truth in the endorsement of candidate for the NFF top seat.
The statement said: “As a policy, the Sultan welcomes all Nigerians and foreigners alike and indeed all men and women of goodwill who come to pay homage and seek his blessings, but does not endorse candidates involved in a political contest for office be it football or social circles.
“President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu, Governor David Umahi, Governor Ben Ayade who all went to seek his blessings but eventually the presidential primaries decided the candidate. Likewise, the Sultan being a father to all would receive all people seeking his blessings but won’t endorse one over the other.”
It was gathered that the candidate in question along with some State Football Association Chairmen recently visited the Sultan and had since been claiming the endorsement by the monarch.
Meanwhile, a respected Sokoto title holder, Dr. Danladi Bako, has also denied the endorsement claims, saying: “The Sultan does not get involved in elections of any sort, be it political, social or traditional office contestation, neither does he have preferred nor favoured candidate.
“People do a lot of name-dropping to mislead the public.”
