Precious Elekima, the Governorship Candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Rivers, says civil servants in the state will enjoy prompt and full salaries without deductions, if elected in 2019.
Elekima made the promise on Wednesday during his campaign rally in Port Harcourt.
He said: “I heard that deductions are made from workers’ salaries in the state. As far as I am concerned, we do not need to deduct any money from your salaries.
“Instead, there will be an addition. Although, I will not want to lay so much emphasis on salary, I will like to provide basic facilities that will stabilise our state.
“Even someone who earns N10,000 or less will be able to do something with it.”
The governorship candidate said that the N18, 000 minimum wage was not enough, yet deductions were made from workers’ salaries.
Elekima said: “The worker needs to pay bills such as school fees, house rent, feeding, buying of clothes and others.
“All these cannot even be taken care of by the salary; so it is insensitive to deduct money from the salaries.
“The issue here is not to pay N30,000 or N50,000 to workers, but government needs to provide social amenities to the people.”
Elekima further promised that pensioners would be on his priority list as they would be paid their pensions before workers’ salaries.
He added that his administration would extend the retirement age of civil servants to 45 years of service and 70 years of age.
He promised that workers would be given mandatory Christmas vacation from December 23 to January 5, to enable them to relax during the yuletide and resume duties refreshed afterwards.
