Some residents of Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State on Friday commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the improvement observed at the “Ounje Eko” Discount Market in the area.
The residents gave the commendation on Good Friday in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria.
They urged the government to continue the discount markets so as to reduce the hardship in the country.
Recall that Governor Sanwo-Olu had directed that the special discount market, which opens on Sundays, be open on Good Friday in line with the spirit of the Easter celebrations.
Oliver Pesigo, a legal officer, said the exercise had improved compared to when it started on March 17.
Pesigo said: “The situation has changed now; residents came early, queued up and bought their foodstuffs from different sellers and left the market.
“I came a little bit late, though I have bought garri and rice; the 420 crates of eggs brought have finished.
“Majority of the people here are buying bread and eggs, that’s why eggs didn’t last for two hours.”
Pesigo urged the government to continue the discount markets, adding that continuity of the programme would cushion the effects of economic hardship in the country.
Sewede Avoseh, on her part, said the arrangements by the officials of the government was good on Friday.
Avoseh said: “The sellers, voucher officers and the ticketers came around 10:30 and the markets opened to intending buyers around 11am.
“The improved service by the officials of the government resulted into residents buying their foodstuffs on time.
“The security of the market is highly commendable, NSCDC, Nigeria Police, Lagos State Neighbourhood, Kick Against Indiscipline, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority are on ground to maintain law and order.
“I am happy to see this; I have bought what I came to buy and I want the government to maintain the standard.”
Kafayat Kappo, another buyer, said she came to buy bread and eggs.
Kappo said: “Today’s market is fantastic.
“I have bought them on time.
“Thank God I didn’t go through any stress today.”
Nusirat Hammed, the coordinator of the programme, said the decision on continuation of the discount markets depends on the state government.
Hammed commended the security operatives in Badagry for ensuring law and order during the market sales.

She said that all the lapses of the first and second weeks of the market had been corrected, adding that by 2pm, rice, garri, beans, eggs and bread had finished in the market.
“We have just little pepper and onions which are not yet bought,” she said.
NAN reports that the Lagos State Government on March 17 started “Ounje Eko” Discount Markets in Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas to cushion the effects of economic hardship in the state.
