The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has been accused of having started dealing with senators that kicked against the amendment of the Electoral Act, which led to the reordering of the elections.
Senators who protested against the reordering of election were Ovie Omo-Agege, Abdullahi Adamu, Abu Ibrahim, Benjamin Uwajumogu, Ali Wakil, Abdullahi Gumel, Binta Masi, Yahaya Abdullahi, Andrew Uchendu and Umaru Kurfi.
Senator Omo-Agege was on Tuesday referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to substantiate media reports quoting him that the amendment is targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
Perceived that the Committee may recommend for his suspension, Omo-Agege on Wednesday during plenary, apogized for the statement credited to him in the media.
However, Adamu was on Wednesday suspended by his colleagues as the Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.
He was accused of having mismanaged the Forum’s N70 million.
However, senators loyal to Buhari and who spoke against the reordering of the elections believe it is Saraki wielding his axe.
Our correspondent observed that template to deal with both Omo-Agege and Adamu was designed by Senator Dino Melaye, who raised the point of order on the statement credited to Omo-Agege in the media.
It was the same Melaye who signed the letter for the removal of Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, as the chairman of NSF.
It could also recalled that Melaye facilitated the removal of Senator Ali Ndume as the Senate Leader and his suspension for six months in the Senate.
Ndume is also perceived to be loyal to Buhari.
There is an indication that more members of the protesting senators will soon be dealt with by the “Saraki Boys” in the Senate.
The “Saraki Boys” are said to be made up of those who are not certain of their return to the Senate “and as such are prepared to risk everything and turn spoilers with every available opportunity”.
Some of them are said to be at loggerheads with their State Governors and as such doubt their return to the Senate.
Melaye is said to fit into this mould as he is at war with his State Governor, Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.
Also in this category is said to be Senator Isa Misau from Bauch State.
Misau has fallen out with his State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, and is believed to stand a slim chance of returning to the Senate in 2019.
Senator Shehu Sani is also said to fall into this category.
Sani is embroiled in an open fight with the Kaduna State Governor, Malay Nasir el-Rufai, who earlier in the week ordered the demolition of the factional headquarters of the All Progressives Congress in the state, a building owned by another Senator, Suleiman Hunkuyi.
Also on the list of Saraki’s hit men is Senator Abduallahi Aliyu Sabi from Niger State.
Sabi, the spokesman of the Senate, is also at loggerheads with the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello.
