The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria has called on the Federal and State Governments to introduce a “Special Media Worker’s Salary Scheme”.
Alhaji Abubakar Maccido, the RATTAWU Chairman, Kano State Chapter, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Saturday.
Maccido said the introduction of the special salary scheme would assist in ensuring the progress and sanity of the media organisations in the country.
According to him, if such a salary scheme is introduced for media workers, it will motivate them to work hard towards moving the country forward and ensuring peace and unity.
The RATTAWU chairman said: “Journalists are like the military, the Police and other security personnel in the country in terms of the risk involved in their duties.
“Therefore, they deserve to also enjoy a lot of risk and other allowances.
“In developed countries, journalists are given special treatment just like the security and health workers.”
While congratulating the newly elected RATTAWU national leaders, Maccido commended the Kano State Government for hosting the union’s 5th National Delegates Conference.
