Omoyele Sowore, Presidential candidate, African Action Congress for the forthcoming elections, has said that population should not be a challenge in Nigeria if government invests in the people and makes them industrious.
Sowore stated this on Wednesday in Abuja at a town hall meeting organised by the Nigerian Television Authority and Daria Media with support from the MacArthur Foundation.
The town hall meeting tagged: “The Candidates “is a two-hour televised series which features the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates of four leading political parties.
The parties were selected from the results of multiple polls aggregated by the Centre for Democracy and Development.
He said if elected as the country`s next president, he would ensure effective utilisation of its human resources and create more jobs to absorb the unemployed.
He stressed that he had a fresh idea that would bring about a positive change in Nigeria and make the country the envy of other nations.
He said: “We are here with fresh ideas to mend a country that had been broken by its past leaders, leaders who missmanaged the country`s resources.”
Sowore, who said he had since his days in the University been fighting against corruption and injustice, said he would ensure judicious use of the country`s resources and justice for all if he was elected as the next president on February 16.
He said as a student, he fought the Military Junta and the defunct Abacha administration.
According to him, he spent six years in the University of Lagos where he graduated from, instead of four years because of his activism.
The AAC candidate refuted reports that he had a dual citizenship, saying “I don’t own an American passport as it is being speculated, I only have a green passport which permits me to stay in America where I have been for 20 years”.
Sowore said his campaign team had been to 32 states of the federation, and that they had received great reception from states visited.
According to the organisers of the town hall series, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi, would feature on the programme on January 30.
The platform provided an opportunity for the studio audience which included Civil Society Organisations, Diplomatic Corps and some members of the general public who had applied online to directly interact with the presidential candidate and his running mate.
The event was also streamed online at www.dtv.media to enable Nigerians in the diaspora and those not near television screens to participate.
Sowore is a human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner and founder of online news agency Sahara Reporters.
