Operatives of the Oghara Division of the Edo State police command, with assistance from some army personnel, on Friday March 19, 2021 arrested an alleged serial rapist, Ovie Michael, 35 yreas old, who specialized in picking his victims with his commercial motorcycle, dispossessing them of their valuables and thereafter raping them.
According to a statement by the acting Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Edafe Bright, the arrest followed series of intelligence gathering.
Ovie, it was said, would pick young girls at night as passengers, divert them to the bush, rob them of their belongings and thereafter forcefully have unlawful carnal knowledge of them while threatening them with dagger.
Nine handsets of different makes, including that of his last victim who reported to the police, were recovered from him. Others include an i-phone valued at N400,000, nine female hand bags, two pairs of eye glasses, five phone chargers, two ATM cards and 13 SIM cards.
Also, a member of a vigilance group who had been abducted by suspected herdsmen on Monday was rescued by men of the Umutu Division of the Delta State police command.
According to the statement, some vigilante members led by one Kess Opia had reported that one of their members, Monday Mila, was kidnapped by suspected herdsmen along his farm road in Umutu.
The DPO of the division, CSP Patience Ugbe, immediately mobilized a combined team of police, vigilantes and some youths and stormed the bush in search of the victim.
“Due to the pressure on them, the suspected kidnappers abandoned the victim and fled. The victim was rescued and reunited with his family. Effort is ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects,” it said.
In another development, Rapid Response Squad operatives while on patrol around Bonsaac area, Asaba, the Delta State capital, arrested one Akpotha Ogheneyole Ernest, 28 of Jahbuze Bonsaac Asaba, a member of the Buccaneers confraternity.
Ogheneyole, together with another (now at large), had taken to their heels when police officers on patrol flagged them. They were chased, and Ogheneyole was arrested.
Upon interrogation, he confessed membership of Buccaneers cult group, and a search was conducted on his residence where Buccaneers regalia with its insignia were recovered from him.
Also on March 21, policemen stormed a black spot within the Open Heaven Hotel premises close to the swimming pool in Iffiekporo community, where one Lucky Afejuku was arrested.
