The last is yet to be heard about the crisis rocking the
newly-registered Peoples Democratic Movement as a political party.
The South-South leadership of the group has categorically denied any
knowledge of its metamorphosis from a pressure group to political
party.
This was after a meeting of the leadership in Asaba, Delta State.
A communiqué signed by the South-South Chairman of the group, Chief
Ejiofor Onyia, did not only declare absolute confidence in the
existing national structures led by the National Chairman, Senator
Abubakar Mahdi, but expressed worry over the development.
Onyia said the zone was not carried along in the plot, maintaining
that “the group remained a pressure group within the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party.”
According to him: “We have decided that we are going to rope-in INEC
(Independent National Electoral Commission) as an interested party in
the registration of PDM as a political party because when the APC
applied for registration, INEC delayed.
“INEC told the nation that they were looking for APC’s secretariat and
other requirements necessary for registration of a political party but
through the back door and without the knowledge of anybody, INEC
hurriedly registered PDM as a political party.”
Meanwhile, the meeting disassociated itself completely from the PDM as
a political party and maintained members of the pressure group
remained loyal members of the PDP.
The communiqué further expressed confidence in the leadership of Chief
Tony Anenih and declared support for the transformation agenda of
President Goodluck Jonathan and support for his re-election bid, if he
decides to run.
The communique added: “We appeal to all leaders to come together as we
face the challenges ahead.
“We also encourage all our members in the zone to continue to work
towards the aspirations of our leaders.”
