Oyegun may emerge APC national chairman

There are strong indications that a former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun, may emerge the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress.
Those who should know in the party informed The Eagle Online that delegates to the party’s ongoing National Convention have unanimously agreed to pick Oyegun as chairman.
Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gabjabiamila, on Friday said the zoning system adopted by the party was intentional since it was not entrenched in the party’s constitution.
Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos), the minority leader of the House of Representatives, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the zoning system adopted by the party was an agreement to carry every member along.
He said: “The zoning system is not in our party’s constitution.
“That decision was intentional to carry the different ethnic groups in the party along.”
The minority leader said that the party would not sacrifice merit on the altar of zoning if a member merited a particular position in the party.
He said that the convention would produce executive members that would pilot the affairs of the new party.
Gbajabiamila described the party as “a movement” that belongs to all Nigerians.
On the crisis in the party in some states, he said that it would be resolved amicably within the party.
Also in an interview, Senator Bola Saraki (APC-Kwara) said that the party did not in any way adopt the zoning system as it was not approved by National Executive Committee of the party.
“For the party to adopt it, it must go to the NEC for approval,” Saraki said.
He explained said that what the party did was an informal discussion within the party between the various groups.
Also speaking, Senator Chris Ngige (APC-Anambra) said that the zoning arrangement was the outcome of the dialogue between members of the party from the different geopolitical zones.
The APC at a meeting prior to its convention zoned some offices to some geopolitical zones such as the national chairman was zoned to the South-South.
