The National Union of Local Government Employees in Kwara on Wednesday directed Workers in all the 16 Local Government Councils in the state to remain at home until full arrears of Workers salaries are paid.
The General Secretary of the Union in Kwara State, Abayomi Afolabi, gave the directive in llorin while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on the ongoing strike embarked upon by workers in all the 16 local councils in the state.
Afolabi said the leadership of the Union is still negotiating with the state government on the payment of workers salaries arrears.
The Secretary of the Union said the fund on ground can only meet the needs for April salary, which cannot meet the demand of the workers.
Afolabi lamented that some Local Councils are owing up to five months arrears of workers salaries.
He said the Union would not call of the strike until the workers received at least three months salaries arrears.
“LG Workers in all the 16 Local Councils and the Local Government Service Commission in Kwara should continue to remain at home until we receive at least three months salaries,” he directed.
When the News Agency of Nigeria Correspondent visited some Local Government Secretariats in the llorin emirate on Wednesday, all offices were under lock and key.
Nobody was allowed to go in, including Directors of Personnel Management and other top officials of the Councils.
Efforts to speak with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Hajia Kikeloma Amasa, on the matter proved futile
Amasa was said to be at a meeting on how to solve the salary problem in the 16 Local Government Councils.
NAN recalls that Workers in all the 16 Local Government Councils in the state began an indefinite strike action on Thursday last week following non payment of over four months salaries.
