One of the aggrieved parties in the election of the Nigeria Premier League Board, Hon. Akin Akinbobola, has petitioned the Minister of Sport, Alhaji Bolaji Abdullai.
In the petition titled “Current State of the Nigeria Football, particularly The Nigeria Premier League Elections”, Akinbobola vowed to go to court if his matter is not favourably treated.
“It is pertinent to alert you that there are still some grey areas which are very fundamental to achieving genuine and sustainable peace that deserves your urgent attention. Specifically, I am referring to the 2010 the NFL (NPL) Chairmanship Elections and the attendant crises which are yet to be resolved to date,” he said in the petition.
Akinbobola, who is the Special Adviser on Sports to the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, alleged that he was tactically and illegally shortchanged in the NPL election.
He added: “I was involved in the elections and as a patriotic Nigerian, who believes in the rule of law. Having felt shortchanged in the elections, I embarked on all authorised means and procedures in accordance with the NFL (NPL) Statutes and Electoral Guidelines to seek justice and fair play, which to date, have not been accorded the deserved attention.
“It’s apparent that justice cannot be secured under the present circumstances except with recourse to a civil court; I therefore respectfully request for your urgent intervention in the matter as I might not have any other option than to seek redress after fourteen days of this letter.”
He commended the commitment of the “minister in ensuring that peace returns to our Football Administration and Management” since his assumption of office.
