The Divisional Police Officer in charge of ‘A’ Division, Suleja in Niger State, five of his men and several other persons were on Monday injured in a bloody clash between the supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party and those of the All Progressives Congress in Suleja town.
The clash reportedly occurred between 11.30am and 12noon when members of the APC laid ambush for PDP members at Kwamba town.
The PDP members were on a campaign rally to the area ahead of Saturday’s local government council election in the state
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, ASP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident to The Eagle Online.
Elkana said the police has brought the situation under control and that investigations were on to arrest the perpetrators.
According to Elkana: “PDP applied and was granted permission to hold its campaign rally in Suleja, only for the APC group to emerge from the opposite direction and attack the PDP members on rally.
“The APC group was led by one Lado, a lawmaker representing the area in the Federal House of Representatives.
“Investigations are ongoing to ascertain his level of involvement in the crisis.”
Elkana said the police however quickly sent a re-enforcement team to rescue the DPO and five of his men who were seriously injured and restored peace to the area.
Elkana promised that proper investigation will be carried out to fish out all those involved no matter how highly placed they are.
