Ibrahim Farinloye, the Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency, South west Zone, has advised Lagos State residents to stay away from areas prone to flood during rainfall.
Farinloye told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Lagos on Friday that that there was a need for Lagos residents to be cautious during the rainy season, to avoid being carried away by running water.
He said that running water has tremendous strength, which could remove anything along its path and so it is advisable for individuals to take extra care during the rainy season.
He said: “We have heard cases of people being carried away by running water and some of these people were never found.
“A few of them were found dead after many days by the shore.”
The information officer said that vital infrastructure could also be damaged or disrupted during a downpour and if this happened, it would block link roads, canals and railway tracks.
“If there was a serious run-off and one is not familiar with the route, it is very easy for one to be carried away by the running water,” he said.
While emphasising the danger posed by running water to humans, Farinloye advised Lagos residents to stay indoors during rainfall, if they can.
He said: “School children are the most vulnerable.
“So we advice that if there is a heavy rainfall, parents should keep their children at home and also school administrators should keep children in school during the rains.”
