The Edo Hospital Management Board branch of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria on Sunday appealed to the unknown kidnappers of its member to release him unhurt and alive.
Dr. Eghe Abe, the branch Chairman of NDCAN, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin.
Abe said: “Our colleague, Dr. Emmanuel Woghiren, a Chief Consultant Paediatrician, was kidnapped on May 18.
“We have embarked on solemn marches within Benin to appeal to the kidnappers to release our colleague unhurt and alive.
“We are also appealing to the police to facilitate Dr. Woghiren’s release because we know that they have the machinery to stop this unwholesome act.
“We want them to use everything they have to bring our colleague out alive and unhurt.
“The police have assured us that they are on top of it but we want to see tangible results.
“It is when we see results that we will know that they are actually on top of the situation.”
Abe said that the association had decided to provide only medical services to patients involved in emergency cases.
He said: “We are not in the right frame of mind to attend to all our patients, especially routine patients, because of this incident.
“Doctors are around but they are taking care of emergency surgery cases and those on admission.
“We are not taking in new cases except they are emergency cases.”
Abe bemoaned the way and manner doctors were being kidnapped in the state, saying that doctors, whose assignment was to save lives, ought to be alive to take care of the people.
He added: “I want to believe that it is an erroneous belief that doctors have money.
“This is very wrong.
“The average doctor is just striving to survive.
“We want the public to know that the doctor’s job is more of a humanitarian service and they don’t have money.”
