Justice Olajumoke Aiki of the Oyo State High Court has fixed October 15 for hearing or settlement in a N500 million damage suit instituted against Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State by a lawyer, Fatai Adeosun.
Aiki fixed the date on Monday after the state counsel, Olumide Ojo, informed the court that the parties were still discussing the terms of settlement.
Adeosun had told the court that on March 5 when the case came up before the court the defence counsel pleaded that June 16 should be fixed for settlement.
He said the parties would meet this week to deliberate on the settlement terms and urged the court to fix a date for settlement or hearing of the case.
Adeosun had filed the suit against Ajimobi following damages he allegedly suffered as a result of the actions of police officers attached to the governor’s convoy.
Other respondents in the suit are ASP Adesoji Adedosu, Sergeant Abubakar Mude and Sergeant Paul Audu.
Adeosun alleged that Adedosu, Mude and Audu attacked, harassed, intimidated and beat him up on the instruction of the governor.
He said the incident took place while he was driving his car at Mokola area of Ibadan.
The complainant said that when he saw the convoy of the governor in the area, he slowed down and swerved to the extreme left side of the road.
He said that in spite of the efforts he made to avoid being hit by the vehicles in the convoy, one of the buses in the convoy hit his car and pushed it to the median of the road.
Adeosun added that a police truck in the convoy marked “ESCORT 1” also blocked his car.
He said armed policemen numbering more than 18 jumped down from the truck and dragged him out of his car.
Adeosun said that he was locked up at Mokola Police Station and was not allowed to lock his car, which resulted in the loss of N100,300 cash and other valuables.
The complainant said the incident happened on November 11, 2013.
He said the conduct of the respondents constituted an infringement on his right to free access to public road.
