The Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in collaboration with Open Society Initiative for West Africa will be holding a three-day capacity building workshop for journalists covering the mineral and mining sector.
The Media Immersion Workshop, with theme: “On the Road to Shared Mining Prosperity: Emphasising Excellence in Mining Reporting,” is scheduled to hold between May 3 and 5, 2017, in Lokoja, Kogi State.
According to a statement by the organisers, no fewer than 50 journalists drawn from the print, electronics and online media, both government and privately-owned, would participate in the workshop.
The statement said: “The workshop is a lead capacity building programme that strives to stimulate and harmonize the working relationship of the media and mining sector in achieving the Federal Government’s economic diversification agenda.
“It aims to train, and in some cases retrain, journalists and social media practitioners, and position them as sector specialists in reporting and communicating developments in the mining sector, as the sector continues to witness growth.”
According to the statement, participants would also visit some mining locations for on-the-spot assessment during the workshop.
It added: “The main objective of this workshop is to enlighten journalists whose reporting focus is on the Mining and Mineral Sector on the best possible methods of creating well researched and engaging stories about the Industry.”
Participants would also focus on the history of mining and its future in Nigeria; analyse the various legislations, policies and regulations guiding the mining industry; identify and distinguish different mineral resources and their geographical locations.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abbas Mohammed, is expected to declare open the workshop.
It is recalled that the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, which recently unveiled a Mining Roadmap, had in November 2016, in partnership with the Australian Embassy, held a knowledge Sharing Workshop on current trends in mining for some categories of workers in the ministry.
