The FA have confirmed that both Manchester United and Crystal Palace have been charged following a “mass confrontation” in their Premier League clash this month.
During the game at Old Trafford on February 4, both sets of players were involved in an on-pitch scuffle that resulted in United midfielder Casemiro being sent off.
Despite Casemiro’s first ever sending-off, United edged out a vital 2-1 win against the Eagles but the repercussions from the brawl have now caught up to both teams.
An FA statement read: “Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have been charged following a mass confrontation between their players in the 67th minute of the Premier League fixture on Saturday 4 February 2023.
“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour, and it’s also alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players refrained from violent behaviour.
“Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have until Monday 13 February 2023 to respond.”
The incident started when Palace player Jeffrey Schlupp knocked Casemiro’s international team-mate Antony off the pitch, which led to the Brazilian pushing the Ghanaian off the pitch.
A 20-person melee ensued, and once that was finished, VAR official Tony Harrington told the man in the middle that Casemiro’s incident required further inspection using the pitchside monitor.
Marriner went to the monitor and agreed with Harrington, before coming back on the pitch to brandish the red card at the midfielder.
It was the first time Casemiro had received a straight red card either playing for his former club Real Madrid, or in 30 matches in all competitions for the Red Devils.
After Casemiro’s dismissal, Crystal Palace got a goal back through Ghanaian Jeffrey Schlupp, but were unable to find an equaliser, as it finished 2-1 to the hosts.
The incident sent shockwaves across the football world and led to criticisms from Gabby Agbonlahor, who claimed that Casemiro should’ve been “arrested”.
Casemiro was ruled out of United’s next three domestic matches, including back-to-back games with rivals Leeds, as well as a home clash with Leicester City.
The Red Devils drew 2-2 with Leeds in their Old Trafford clash as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford rescued a point for the hosts.
Despite the suspension, Casemiro will return in time for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at the end of the month.
