Season 5 of popular HBO Max series, Insecure is set to drop on Showmax on the 28th of December, 2021.
The comedy series follows the awkward experience and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman through the lives of two female black women – Issa and Molly. Its first season was released in October 2016, and currently has a total of five seasons.
According to Executive Producer Issa Rae, the fifth season marks the final season of the comedy series. Speaking at the season premiere, she explained her reason behind the decision to wrap up the show in season five.
“I wanted a five-season show for this particular story. I’m a restless person. We’re going to be asking people to commit five years of their lives to something. You kind of get restless after that fourth year, and I want to love these people. I want these people to still want to be on the show, from the writers to the actors to the crew.”
Insecure does not only appeal to the Black American community, it also permeates across the African region particularly in Nigeria. The comedy series stars Nigerian-American actress and comedian, Yvonne Orji, who was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the comedy series and three NAACP Image Awards. She also debuted her comedy special Momma, I Made It primarily on HBO. The special is also available on Showmax.
Yvonne Orji who stars as Molly on the show spoke on the lasting influence of ‘Insecure’, she mentioned that ‘the show was able to allow executives and creatives to see what’s possible; to be able to tell a truthful, undiluted story about the Black experience in a way that has no trauma associated with it.’
When Issa Rae debuted HBO’s ‘Insecure’ in 2016, she became the first woman to create and star in a scripted series for a premium cable channel. She’s the second Black woman to do so on primetime TV, Fox.
‘Insecure’ is best known for its rabid social media following.
African streaming platform, Showmax is the only licensed platform to stream the complete series from season one to five to viewers in Nigeria.
Showmax is also releasing Insecure: The Final Season documentary on 4 January, 2022.
Viewers can now binge-watch the entire comedy series from the first season to the fifth for as low as N1,200 on Showmax.
