A Nigerian widow, Omotunde Eyiowuawi, has called on relevant agencies to intervene in her case as a travelling firm, Hemingway Safaris Africa, has refused to refund the money the family deposited for a proposed travel after the death of her husband, Olayinka.
According to Eyiowuawi, who spoke to The Eagle Online, she and her late husband had approached the travelling agency to plan for a family vacation.
She said she and her husband went for a training at the company’s office situated in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State and the agency stated that it has facilities for children, opportunities of staying in five-star hotels and others.
She said she and her husband bought the idea, believing it will serve as “exposure” to the kids.
Eyiowuawi narrated: “They said they have plan for five years, 20 years and we said we do not need it for five years and we asked them for the lowest plan and they told us, explaining that if we should join them that day, they will give us a bonus.”
According to her, her late husband, Olayinka, presented a cheque of N250,000 initially and later presented another N250,000 cheque to enable the family enjoy a family vacation in South Africa.
However, the husband died during the travelling preparation.
Eyiowuawi stated that although one of the staff of the agency had told them the day they presented the cheque that they have three days to come back for it if they are no more interested in the package, but then no one could envisage that death could happen.
Now the Agency, according to her, is saying that since the three days had elapsed, the only other solution is for Eyiowuawi to convince another person to part with the said amount for a travel package for her to be refunded.
The company said the fund had been invested and in such investment there is no refund.
Eyiowuawi stated that they had not been given visas and they have not also submitted their passports when the husband died on August 23, 2018.
She said now she needs the money to take care of pressing needs such as paying school fees and repairing the leaking roof of her house.
When The Eagle Online visited the office of Hemingway Safaris Africa in Alausa, Ikeja, our reporter met with one Arthur Paul, who claimed to be in the ICT Department of the company.
Paul told The Eagle Online that the agency will not speak unless there is a written request through the official email address on the receipt of the company.
However, repeated mails to the email address have been bouncing back, with the message: “Message failure.”
The Eagle Online was able to get another email address: info@hemingwaystours.com, to which messages were sent requesting for response from the company.
When two weeks elapsed and there was no response to the mail, The Eagle Online reporter made another visit to the office of the travel firm only to be given another email bu Paul, who claimed that the initial email to which the request was sent was not the “right email”.
When The Eagle Online reporter requested for the “right email”, Paul gave him: info@hemingways.com, which also bounces back messages.
Our reporter sent an SMS to Paul telling him that the email address he gave is “having issues” but as at press time, he was yet to reply.
