Issa Hayatou, the President of the Confederation of African Football, has expressed satisfaction with the continued partnership of Nigeria’s telecommunication company, Globacom, with CAF in honouring ambassadors of African football.
Hayatou extolled the relationship in his address of welcome at the 9th edition of the Glo-CAF award on Thursday in Lagos.
He said the men and women who in one way or the other contributed to the radiance of African football deserved a place in history.
He said: “If the trophy that distinguishes the player of the year was placed in focus, the multiplication of awards of our disciplines without forgetting the players, teams and coaches is right.
“The agreement between Globacom and CAF in its 10th year has always been to reward great champions and hardworking sportsmen and women of the continent.
“The vote of the grand electors, all of them specialists in the game, is totally independent where CAF only comes in to count and calculate the eventual scores obtained.”
Mike Adenuga, the Chairman Globacom Nigeria Limited, the sponsors of the 2014 Glo-CAF awards, said the company was proud to celebrate the greatness in African football.
Adenuga said that the theme of this year’s event was: “Powering Greatness in African Football.”
According to Adenuga, Globacom is dedicated to celebrating football fans across the African continent for their contributions to generating excitement at every game of football.
He said: “By their passion and strength, they light up the arena and complement the artistry by footballers on the pitch.
“The Glo-CAF Awards has over the years been firmly established as the most authentic platform to annually celebrate the success story that African football has become.”
In the 2014 Glo-CAF awards are the Desert Warriors of Algeria for the award of the National Team of the year, defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.
In the women national team of the year, Nigeria’s Super Falcons emerged the winner.
Es Setif FC of Algeria was honoured with African Club of the year for their efforts in clinching the African Champions League in 2014, an achievement that eluded Algerian clubs since 1990.
The Youth player of the year went to sensational Asisat Oshoala, for her exploits achieved in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada.
Oshoala was also honoured with the Woman player of the year award having played a significant role in Nigeria’s Super Falcons winning the Africa Women Championship in Namibia in 2014.
The Coach of the year went to Kheireddine Madoui of ES Setif FC of Algeria for his efforts in his club’s achievement in winning the Africa Champions Club trophy in 2014.
Meanwhile, the hallmark of the award was Yaya Toure of Cote d’ Ivoire winning for the fourth time, the Africa Male Player of the year in 2014.
