Hajiya Jummai Abdul, a nutritionist with Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, on Tuesday advised Nigerians to make groundnuts part of their meals to boost their memory.
Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the nuts, which could be consumed in various ways, lowered the risk of heart diseases.
She said the nuts could be roasted, boiled and eaten raw, adding: “Groundnuts and its products are beneficial in the treatment of haemophilia.
“It prevents nose bleeding and helps in reducing excessive menstrual bleeding in women.”
The nutritionist said groundnuts contained at least 13 vitamins, including vitamins A, B, C and E, adding that it was also rich in 26 essential minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc and boron among others.
Abdul said the nuts could also help in brain function and development and to maintain strong bones.
“It is said to provide resistance and immunity against dangerous infections like hepatitis and tuberculosis,” she said.
Abdul said groundnuts were rich in anti-oxidants and a chemical called resveratrol that helps in reducing the risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases.
She said its consumption could reduce the risk of cancer and help in anti-ageing, thus, keeping the body young and fit.
She added: “Groundnuts contain adequate levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which helps to lower the low-density lipoprotein and increases high-density lipoprotein level in the blood.
“This, in return, prevents coronary artery disease and strokes by taking care of the healthy blood lipid profile.”
According to Abdul, groundnuts contain amino acids and are a good source of dietary protein, which is essential for growth and development.
“Groundnuts are packed with B-complex groups of vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, and foliates, which contribute towards brain health and stimulate blood flow to the brain,” she said.
