Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom says his government is poised to enhance computer literacy and promote Information Communication Technology in schools.
Emmanuel, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Aniekan Akpan, made the pledge on Monday at the inauguration of 40 computer sets at Ubodom Community Secondary School in Urue, Offong Oruko Local Government Area.
The governor said the vision of the state government was to build on sustainable platforms to equip youths with ICT know-how for self and social development.
The computer sets were donated by a Lagos-based computer firm, Mail Computers.
He said the Ministry of Education monitored the teaching as well as provision of qualified ICT teachers to ensure that students meet up with the expected standard.
Emmanuel commended the computer firm for its patriotic disposition in donating the computers to the school.
The governor urged the school authorities and students to make effective use of the computer sets and to protect them from vandalism.
He called on stakeholders and public-spirited individuals to continue to support government in its education drive for the benefit of the youth and the society.
In his remarks, Ekele Chidimere, the Managing Partner of Mail Computer Firm, said the company’s gesture was in line with the state government’s vision to improve education in the state.
Chidemere said the company would also donate similar items to Ibaka Kilometre Secondary School and Okobo Community Secondary School in Urue Offong Uruko.
Arit Okwong, the Principal of the school, thanked the donor for the magnanimity, which would further expose the students to the ICT world.
Okwong said adequate security would be provided for the computer sets.
She appealed to the government to also support the school with infrastructure.
Okwong promised to continue to improve on the standard of teaching in the school.
