Gov. Ambode adopts LASU’s best graduating student

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday promised to sponsor Adetoro Ogunsanya in his post-graduate programme.
Ogunsanya is the best graduating student of the Lagos State University for the 2016/2017 academic session.
Ogunsanya from the Department of Business Administration scored a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate of 4.7 to emerge the best graduating student in 2016/2017.
Ambode said he was impressed by Ogunsanya’s performance in his speech at the 22nd Convocation and Award of degrees by the university to its graduating students.
The governor said that the state government had stopped offering scholarships to students, but was only giving them bursaries.
He said that his coming to the university on the first day of the convocation was divine.
Ambode said: “There is a divine side to the story of the best graduating student, maybe I choose to come today because of the best graduating student.
“The visitor to the university usually attends the higher degree ceremony of the convocations.
“But I will adopt the best graduating student because his story is too compelling and reflect on my story.
“I will personally sponsor him to any university of his choice in the world and as the best graduating student, I am giving him a gift of N5million.’’
Earlier, Ogunsanya in his speech as the best graduating student, had requested that he should be given scholarship for his master’s programme in the United Kingdom.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ogunsanya disclosed that he inherited cataract from his late father and had to battle with the disease at his younger age.
Ogunsanya said that the illness initially affected one of his eyes and later spread to the second one.
He said that his initial surgery was not successful and that led him to perform woefully in his first WAEC and NECO examinations.
He said: “I lived with my uncle and his wife, they are the ones that facilitated my medical treatment at University College Hospital, Ibadan, for a successful operation.
“After the treatment, I returned to the secondary school after three years’ delay to rewrite my WAEC which I passed in flying colours.
“After then, I gained admission into the university.’’
Ogunsanya lauded Ambode for his gesture.
He said: “Governor Ambode’s magnanimity is beyond my expectation.’’
Ogunsanya promised to give back to the society by joining the academics once he had completed and returned from his master’s programme.
He graduated from LASU’s Department of Business Administration.
